Pen
yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd Llywelyn.
August 1992.
Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd Llywelyn are respectively the 7th, 4th and 3rd highest mountains in England and Wales. Indeed the Carneddau is the highest/longest plateau/ridge south of the Scottish border. Stating this gives the game away as readers should now realise that once on top of Pen yr Ole Wen it is not a too undulating walk to bag the other peaks, but you’ve still got to get up Pen yr Ole Wen first.
From
the A5 the route goes north and, having skirted around the farm at Glan
Dena, we continued across very marshy fields generally following the Afon
Lloer which flows out of Cwn Lloer to the east side of the ridge between
Pen yr Ole Wen and Carnedd Dafydd. The path here was very vague and we
were not sure The
day was fairly hot and humid and by the time we reached the top the back
of my shirt was soaking wet where my rucksack had been. I remember; having
brought another shirt with me, changing it on the top and thinking I really
should get some more appropriate walking garb. Until then, most of my
shirts, trousers etc had got It
was now easy time. Once on the Carneddau Ridge it is comparatively level,
and easy to navigate. We just followed the massive cairns that are along
the ridge path and the next 3000-ft peak, Carnedd Dafydd, was soon reached.
From
here the route to Carnedd Llywelyn was also easy to follow. We just kept
to the ridge as the path curved to the left around the Black Ladders,
the rock face on the north edge of the ridge. While we walked along this
part a head popped up on the left and a climber scrambled on to the top.
I don’t know what route he had taken up Black Ladders; I was only pleased
he had done it and not me. I love walking but you would never get me "dangling"
from a rope. I know Greg has done quite a lot of rock and ice climbing
since then but like his As this was our first big trip on the Carnedau I was unsure how difficult it all would be and also at that time I was not so knowledgeable about the lie of the land and other mountains in the vicinity. I therefore did not consider the minor diversion to conquer Y Elen, but I have done it a couple of times since. However, currently (June 2002) I have done all of the 20 highest Snowdonia Peaks except No.19, which is Pen yr Helgi du. The sad thing is I was only a very short distance off the route we took from Carnedd Llywelyn. From
Carnedd Llywelyn we went east and then south east over Pen y waun wen
and took a path off the ridge which went
